Move files to and from a remote computer

A driver, a Tally backup, a scanned form, a whole folder of photos: here is how files get across during a session, both ways, with no size limit and nothing passing through our servers unencrypted.

1. The file manager (Windows app on their side)

Press Files in the session. A window opens with two panes, like an FTP client: your folders on the left, theirs on the right.

  • On the left, Choose folder… picks a folder on your computer to work in (Chrome, Edge, or the AcrossView app's own window).
  • On the right, their drives and main folders. Double-click to open folders; make, rename and delete folders.
  • Select files or whole folders and press the arrows to move them either way. The queue at the bottom shows progress. There is no size limit; a 1 GB file takes about ten minutes on a typical connection.

This needs the Windows app on their side with control allowed, and they see a line on their screen saying which folder you are looking at.

2. Drag and drop, or Send files

Drop a file anywhere on the session window, or press Send files. It lands in their Downloads\AcrossView folder (Windows app) or is offered to them with a Save button (browser). Works whichever side you are on, with or without the app.

3. Copy here, paste there

With the Windows app on their side and control allowed, the clipboard is shared both ways: copy text, a screenshot or files on one computer, press Ctrl+V on the other. Files you copy on their computer are brought over and put on your clipboard when you use the AcrossView app's own window.

Safety

  • Every file is encrypted end to end and checked on arrival; a damaged or tampered file is thrown away.
  • A received file is never run. The app only saves it and can show it in Explorer.
  • File names are cleaned so nothing can be written outside the folder meant for it.
Can I transfer files when nobody is at the other computer?

Yes, in an unattended session. The file manager works the same way.

Where do received files go on my side?

In the file manager, into the folder you chose. Otherwise, the browser offers Save, or the app saves to Downloads\AcrossView. You can change that folder in Settings.

Why is a big file slow?

Files travel in small sealed pieces over the same channel as the screen, about 1 to 1.5 MB per second. A faster path for large files is planned.
